HUNTER, N.Y. (WNYT)- The Greene County Sheriff’s Office says a 15-year-old boy died after an apparent drowning at Fawn’s Leap.

According to the sheriff’s office, the boy was swimming with three friends from Brooklyn at the base of the waterfalls on April 18 at about 11:57 a.m. Investigators said he jumped from the lower ledge near the base of the falls and could not swim out because the hydraulic current was too strong.

His three friends went into the water to try to pull him out, the sheriff’s office said. They could not reach him and also started to get pulled under.

A New York State Forest Ranger reached the boy and pulled him to shore, but the sheriff’s office said he had been in the water for more than 20 minutes. Greene County Paramedics and Hunter Ambulance personnel started life-saving measures before he was taken to Columbia Memorial Hospital.

The sheriff’s office said resuscitation efforts at the hospital were unsuccessful and the boy was pronounced dead. An autopsy was scheduled, the road was closed for about an hour during the rescue and recovery effort and the investigation is continuing.
