At least two people were killed on Tuesday evening in a ferocious, multiple-alarm fire at a five-story mixed-use building in New York City.

In addition to the fatalities, at least 11 others were injured, including five firefighters, according to city fire officials. The blaze prompted a heavy response from the New York City Fire Department, who worked to extinguish the fire that spread across multiple floors of the structure, which holds storefronts on the bottom level and apartments above.

Fire and significant smoke were reported at the building on Belmont Avenue in the Bronx in the mid-afternoon. The blaze grew to five alarms several hours later.

NYC Emergency Management posted an update later on Tuesday evening.

“NYC Emergency Management and partner agencies are responding to a devastating fire in the Belmont section of the Bronx. We are keeping the injured residents and displaced families in our thoughts,” the agency wrote in a post on social media. “@FDNY firefighting operations are ongoing and NYCEM continues to coordinate response efforts. The American Red Cross is serving displaced residents and connecting them to immediate support.”

Helicopter footage from local media sources showed firefighters using hoses to spray water inside the building’s windows and toward the roof from an adjacent structure.

In a post on social media, the FDNY told residents to expect smoke and traffic delays in the Belmont area of the Bronx, advising people nearby to close their windows to avoid smoke.

According to FDNY chief of fire operations Kevin Woods, a large part of the building collapsed during Tuesday’s firefighting efforts.

“The roof has collapsed in a large portion of that building. A lot of the stairwell has collapsed as well,” Woods said at a news conference Tuesday evening. “Our ladder companies pulled up. They did a phenomenal job. They rescued people in the front and rear of that building.”
