“It’s so cold,” Maria Reyes said. “Yesterday was too much cold. So, I don’t know if the baby has very good clothes. I don’t know who’s here yesterday. I left around 10 p.m., 10:30 p.m.”
Reyes works as a street vendor selling gifts and other items near West 44th Street and Seventh Avenue in Times Square.
Shortly after she said she left for the night Tuesday, police say an emergency call led officers to the intersection where they found a 1-year-old baby girl: alone, conscious and alert.
“If they can’t take care of a baby, they should leave it in a hospital or take it to a precinct,” Nicole Rober said.
In fact, there is an NYPD substation in the heart of Times Square, just feet from where the baby was left.
“I can’t even imagine what life is going to be like for them,” Sky Faber said.
Faber was also there Tuesday night, shortly before the baby was found.
“There are more moral ways to go about that versus just leaving them in a busy area with no protection,” she said. “You don’t know what’s going to happen to them.”
Police said the infant was taken to Northwell Greenwich Village Hospital in stable condition.
Regardless of what happened that led to a baby being left in Times Square. Legally, a parent can anonymously abandon a baby up to 30 days of age and without fear of prosecution if the baby is left with an appropriate person or location, like a hospital or staffed police or fire station, and someone is notified.
If older than 30 days, the parent must contact the Administration for Children’s Services to discuss giving up parental rights.
