1. Buffalo mayor stresses need for proposed 25.8% property tax increase in new budget
Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan broke down his proposed 25.8% increase in property taxes at a special community meeting Tuesday night. Ryan said it’s needed to help close a $109 million budget gap and refill reserves emptied after what he called years of mismanagement.
2. New York lawmakers pass sixth state budget extender that runs through April 27
The New York state Legislature on Wednesday passed a sixth state budget extender — now three weeks past the budget’s deadline — which was prompty signed into law by Gov. Kathy Hochul.
3. Hamburg school to rename itself for Buffalo Sabres throughout playoffs
The Boston Valley School is showing its support for the Buffalo Sabres during their playoff series against the Boston Bruins by temporarily renaming itself “Sabres Valley School.”
4. NHL commissioner says outdoor hockey will return to Western N.Y.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman says that it is only a matter of time before another outdoor hockey game is played in Western New York.
5. Market Arcade 8 in downtown Buffalo reopens Wednesday
The Market Arcade 8Â in downtown Buffalo, now known as Scene One Entertainment, is reopening its doors on Wednesday. The Scene One Entertainment Group is taking over the former AMC Theater and this will be its first theater in the region.
6. Iran fires on 3 ships in Strait of Hormuz as U.S. maintains blockade and diplomacy stalls
Iran fired on three ships in the Strait of Hormuz and seized two of them on Wednesday, intensifying its assault on shipping in the key waterway a day after U.S. President Donald Trump extended a ceasefire while maintaining an American blockade of Iranian ports.
