SJU-AAUP and the Faculty Association, the unions representing faculty at St. John’s University, have filed an unfair labor practice charge with New York State’s Public Employment Relations Board. The unions announced their action in an email Wednesday morning.
The university announced on Feb. 19 that it was withdrawing recognition of the two unions.
Referring to University President the Rev. Brian Shanley, SJU-AAUP acting President Sophie Bell, a St. John’s professor, said in a statement, “Father Shanley has torn up our union contract, attacked the rights of our faculty, and unlawfully abandoned our negotiations despite fifty-six years as the state-certified and university-recognized faculty unions at SJU. SJU is abandoning the very values our university was founded on and our faculty impart to students every single day.”
“Because this matter is the subject of pending litigation, the University is unable to comment at this time,” said Brian Browne, a spokesman for St. John’s University, in an email in Wednesday
