Canandaigua, N.Y. — A man has received a six-month jail sentence after he struck and seriously injured a kitten on Christmas Day, according to Ontario County District Attorney Jason MacBride.
The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office said it responded around 5:40 p.m. Dec. 25 to Loomis Road in Farmington for a reported domestic incident. Deputies found an injured 5-month-old domestic shorthair kitten named Smokey. They determined Keaghn Picaro struck Smokey several times during the day because he would not use his litter box, fracturing his right hind leg.

Picaro later pleaded guilty to aggravated cruelty to animals, criminal contempt and resisting arrest, MacBride said. Judge Stefanie Barnes sentenced him Tuesday to six months in the Ontario County Jail and five years of probation. The sentence prohibits Picaro from owning, purchasing or being around any animals. He was also ordered to pay restitution and an order of protection was issued.
“Animal cruelty cases are disturbing and will be prosecuted seriously in Ontario County,” MacBride said in a release. “We are grateful for the partnership between law enforcement and the Humane Society in protecting vulnerable animals who cannot protect themselves.”
