April 24, 1947 – Author Willa Cather died at her home in New York City on April 24, 1947.
Born in Virginia in 1876, Cather and her family moved to the Red Cloud area when she was 8 years old. Cather graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1895 and went on to teaching and newspaper work before turning to writing.
Cather wrote nearly a dozen novels, including “One of Ours,” which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1922.
