The FIFA World Cup is coming to the New York area this summer, and despite the pricey tickets, or more likely because of them, the city will run free, official fan events in every single borough, complete with daily programming and live match viewings.

Yesterday, Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the plans. ” If you can’t get to the World Cup, the World Cup is coming to you,” said Governor Hochul. She explained that 1.1 million visitors are expected to come to the region for the FIFA World Cup, generating about $3.3 billion of economic activity, which is great for the economy, but it’s also important to make the experience fun, exciting, and accessible for New Yorkers, too.

The free events will span all five boroughs, so everyone gets a chance to see the matches and enjoy the experience.

Here’s the breakdown, borough by borough:

Queens

The USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows hosts the Group Stage HQ from June 11–27 with daily programming and match viewings. This is your best bet for the earliest action in the tournament.

Brooklyn

Brooklyn Bridge Park runs the longest of any location, from June 13 through July 19, with daily programming. The viewing area is at Emily Roebling Plaza, which has a direct view of lower Manhattan across the water.

The Bronx

Bronx Terminal Market hosts a Fan Zone on June 13–14 with matchday and local cultural programming. It’s a shorter run, but a good chance for Bronx residents to take part in the festivities together.

Staten Island

Staten Island University Hospital Community Park hosts events June 29–July 2 with daily programming and evening match viewings. The park just got a new LED scoreboard installed specifically for this.

Manhattan

Rockefeller Center hosts the NYNJ World Cup 26 & Telemundo Fan Village from July 6–19, with extended hours during Finals Week. This one lines up with the knockout rounds and final, so expect the biggest crowds here.

All five locations are free and open to the public. The city is billing this as a 39-day citywide celebration.

“When I think back on my first World Cup, some of my most meaningful memories weren’t in the stadium, they were in the fan zones, surrounded by thousands of people brought together by a pure love of the game,” said Mayor Mamdani. “That’s what we’re building here: a World Cup that belongs to New Yorkers. By bringing these free fan events to every borough, we’re making sure everyone can be part of that joy.”

Specific programming details are still being announced. For updates, check the official NY/NJ FIFA World Cup website.
