BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) — A large crowd erupted outside a Brooklyn hospital on Saturday night in protest of an ICE arrest.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Chidozie Wilson Okeke, a Nigerian national, at an undisclosed location, according to DHS officials. They said Okeke has previous arrests for assault and criminal drug possession.
Okeke requested medical assistance and was taken to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center for evaluation following his arrest, according to DHS.
Immigration officials said he was noncompliant inside the hospital, “throwing himself to the floor and screaming.”
“Our officers followed their training and used the minimum amount of force necessary to make the arrest,” a DHS spokesperson said.
Police said an unscheduled protest formed outside the hospital building during the incident.
The protest broke out around 10:25 p.m. at Wyckoff Avenue and Stanhope Street, according to NYPD.
NYPD officers said they issued multiple warnings directing people to move to the sidewalk. Nine people were taken into custody; eight were formally arrested, and one was issued a court summons and released.
The NYPD said it had no involvement in the ICE operation.
