Mother’s Day arrived early at the Bronx Zoo with the birth of rare, endangered collared lemur twins, zoo reps announced on Sunday.
The twin babies, born in March at the zoo’s Madagascar! exhibit, mark an uncommon and encouraging milestone for the species. Twin births are rare among collared lemurs, making the pair’s debut especially significant for the world.
The adorable pair are just starting to explore their habitat at the zoo while staying close to mom, often seen nestled in her fur. The twins are also using their long tails for balance as they leap through the branches of their beautiful home.

Zoo officials said the species, native to southern Madagascar, faces serious threats in the wild due to hunting and habitat loss. Zoo conservation programs play an important role in preserving species’ futures.
The Bronx Zoo participates in the collared lemur Species Survival Program, which helps maintain healthy genetic diversity in zoo populations.
The zoo’s newest residents are a reminder of the bond between mother and babies, making them a great family to visit on Mother’s Day, May 10.
