New York City logged the fewest murders on record for both the first four months of the year and the month of April, the NYPD said Monday.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said there were 76 murders citywide from January through April, breaking the previous record low of 86 set in 2018. April alone saw 19 murders, surpassing the previous low ever recorded of 21 in both 2014 and 2017.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch credited “precision-policing” strategies targeting illegal guns and violent gangs
Citywide, major crime declined 9.5% in April. Shooting incidents fell from 70 to 57 year over year, and the number of shooting victims fell from 83 to 67.
Murders saw the steepest drop, falling by 40.6% year over year in April, from 32 to 19.
The NYPD has been tracking crime statistics via CompStat since 1994.
“Once again, the crime reductions across the five boroughs are a direct result of our precision-policing strategy: focusing on illegal guns, putting officers where they’re needed most, and taking down violent gangs,” Tisch said in a statement.
“These results are made possible by the women and men of the NYPD carrying out that work with focus and discipline. That approach is producing real, measurable crime reductions across the city, and it will continue to guide our work in the months ahead,” she added.
Other major crime categories also saw significant drops. Burglary declined 21.5%, auto theft fell 20.2% and robbery dropped 13.8%. Felony assault decreased 6%, while grand larceny dipped 4.4%. Retail theft also dropped sharply, down 17.7%.
In the transit system, crime remained relatively flat year to date, down 0.6%. April saw a slight increase of two incidents compared to last year.
The Bronx led the city in crime reduction, with major crime down 15.5% in April, according to the department. The borough recorded just four murders — its lowest number ever recorded for the month — along with steep declines in shootings and auto theft.
The NYPD noted hate crimes also declined, with 50 confirmed incidents in April — down 35.1% from the same time last year, when 77 incidents were recorded.
Reported rape was the only major crime in which the NYPD saw an increase, which it said was partly due to expanded legal definitions under the “Rape is Rape” law, as well as increased efforts to encourage survivors to come forward.
The department said beginning Monday, it will continue its enforcement efforts through its Summer Violence Reduction Plan, which will deploy up to 3,800 officers across the city and transit system.
