Manhattan High track and field turned in another strong showing Friday, as the Indians’ girls placed second and the boys finished ninth at the Seaman Relays.
The girls scored 96 points to finish runner-up in a competitive field, while the boys totaled 35.5 points. Piper High and Olathe North (70 points) shared the boys’ title, while Olathe North won the girls’ field outright with 142 points.
Manhattan’s girls were once again led by their distance group, highlighted by a standout night from Gabrielle Converse.
Converse picked up a win in the 1600 meters in 4:58.85 and followed with a runner-up finish in the 3200 (10:56.02). Lauren Perry added a fifth-place finish in the 800 (2:19.63), while the 4×800 relay team of Zara Koehn, Talia Tindall, Allison Knopp and Perry placed third in 9:48.73.
The Indians also saw production from their sprint group, led by Michelle Jeje. Jeje placed second in both the 100 (12.34) and 200 (25.94), while Sarah Oberreuter added a fourth-place finish in the 200. Manhattan’s 4×100 relay team of Demya Gill, Oberreuter, Sophie Stanley and Jeje took second in 49.28.
In the field events, Callie Porter led the way with a first-place finish in the triple jump (35-10.5). Jorryn Hall added a runner-up finish in the shot put (40-5.75) while also placing fifth in the javelin and eighth in the discus.
The Peabody sisters contributed in the high jump, with Alexis Peabody placing fourth at 5-4 and Sophia Peabody finishing sixth. Kayla Cramer and Segen Gish added fourth- and sixth-place finishes in the pole vault.
On the boys’ side, Manhattan was led by its field events and distance runners.
Wilson Wesch paced the distance group with a fourth-place finish in the 3200 meters (9:27.91), while Evan Middleton added a runner-up finish in the shot put (55-1).
The Indians also saw strong results in the jumps, as Brady Durtschi placed fourth in the triple jump (44-4.25) and Michael Jeje followed in fifth. Caleb Brumbaugh added a fourth-place finish in the long jump (21-8.5), while Logan Herzog cleared 6-4 to place fifth in the high jump.
Lucas Strawn rounded out the scoring in the field events with a fourth-place finish in the pole vault (13-6).
Manhattan will continue the regular season on Friday at the Salina Central Relays.
Wamego boys take 4th, Rock Creek squads place 7th
Wamego and Rock Creek turned in a handful of strong performances as well on Friday at the Seaman Relays.
As a team, Wamego finished fourth in the boys’ standings (54) and 13th in the girls’ race (14). Rock Creek placed seventh on the girls’ side (41 points) and seventh for the boys (35).
Wamego’s boys were led by a pair of event titles, as the 4×800 relay team captured gold in 8:16.83 and Tasen Nickel cleared 14-0 to win the pole vault.
Peyton Parker anchored the distance group with a runner-up finish in the 1600 (4:15.24) and a third-place run in the 3200 (9:24.91), while William Adams added a fourth-place finish in the 300 hurdles (40.60). The Red Raiders also saw scoring efforts from their sprint relays, placing fourth in the 4×400 (3:27.91) and fifth in the 4×100 (43.37).
On the girls side, Shayne Pittenger-Reed paced Wamego with a fourth-place finish in the 800 (2:16.63), while Liz Bollhoefer cleared 5-4 to take fifth in the high jump. The 4×800 relay added a sixth-place finish (10:25.75), and Skylar Schoenbeck placed seventh in the javelin (120-0).
Rock Creek was highlighted by a pair of individual wins on the girls side, as Rory Pitzer took first in the discus (128-2) and added a sixth-place finish in the shot put (37-8.5). Madilyn Schadegg and Aubrey McCarn each turned in third-place finishes in the high jump (5-6) and triple jump (34-9.75), respectively, while Clare Buessing scored in both distance events, placing sixth in the 1600 (5:24.28) and seventh in the 800 (2:20.65).
For the Mustang boys, Thomas Eagles led the way with a runner-up finish in the 400 (49.65), while the 4×100 relay placed third in 42.62. Aidan Torrey added a third-place finish in the long jump (22-2.75), and Izaya Wenzl cleared 14-0 for second in the pole vault. Dylan Jones contributed a fifth-place finish in the 110 hurdles (15.31).
