A New York man has pleaded guilty to working with another person to try to steal a bundle of mail from a postal box in Connecticut — a theft that was thwarted by law enforcement.
Tulio Nunez, 25, of the Bronx, New York, took a plea deal during a hearing Monday in federal court in New Haven, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut.
The deal required him to plead guilty to conspiracy to commit an offense against the United States, possession of a key adopted by the post office and theft of mail, federal officials said. Nunez is expected to face sentencing on July 27, when he faces a maximum of 20 years in prison, according to officials.
Authorities allege that Nunez and an identified associate were caught trying to steal mail from a postal collection box in West Haven on Oct. 2, 2023. According to officials, Nunez drove to Campbell Avenue and parked in front of the collection box while his associate got out of the vehicle and opened the box using a counterfeit postal arrow key.
The associate allegedly removed a basket filled with mail and put it in the passenger seat of the vehicle, officials said. Law enforcement officers who were conducting surveillance of the postal box then converged on the vehicle before Nunez allegedly tried to flee, according to authorities. He allegedly reversed the vehicle and struck a law enforcement vehicle before authorities apprehended both individuals.
Nunez and his associate were both arrested on state charges. On Sept. 23, 2025, a federal grand jury in New Haven returned an indictment against Nunez. He has been free on a $10,000 bond since his federal arrest.
