ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) — New York State is stepping up enforcement against drivers using fake or altered license plates as part of a targeted crackdown this week.
The initiative, known as “Operation Plate Check,” brings together State Police and local law enforcement agencies to focus on fraudulent plates often used to avoid tolls or evade detection. Officials say the effort also targets aggressive and unsafe driving.
According to the governor’s office, last year’s operation led to more than 3,300 tickets for license plate violations, a significant increase compared to the year prior. Authorities also reported an increase in tickets for suspended registrations and the recovery of stolen vehicles during the enforcement period.
Officials say the goal is to improve roadway safety and hold drivers accountable.
