NY man tried to cash stolen tax refund check at Wilton bank: Police

WILTON — A New York man was arrested last week after police said he tried to cash a stolen tax refund check at a Connecticut bank. 

The man, identified as Tyrese Niles, reportedly tried to cash the check at the Webster Bank on Town Green Road in Wilton on April 28, according to the Wilton Police Department. 

Officers responded to the bank for the report of a suspicious man attempting to cash a stolen tax refund check from the Internal Revenue Service, police said. Police said Niles, a Bronx, N.Y., resident, also had a fake ID. 

As officers arrived, Niles began running away, according to police. Officers chased Niles and detained him on the Town Green lawn before he was able to escape into a getaway vehicle, police said. 

Police charged Niles with third-degree larceny, second-degree identity theft, conspiracy to commit second-degree identity theft, criminal impersonation, second-degree forgery, tampering with physical evidence and interfering with an officer.

Judicial records indicate he was being held on a $25,000 bond and is scheduled to appear at state Superior Court in Stamford June 18.
