THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) — A school of hip-hop is coming to the home of hip-hop in New York City.
Aspiring musicians will be able to perfect their skills in emceeing, DJing, graffiti, break dancing and knowledge of self at the new Bronx School of Hip-Hop opening this fall. Coursework will also include audio production, digital media and financial literacy, alongside the standard curriculum.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and New York City Public Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels announced the opening of the new school alongside four other public schools coming to the Bronx and Queens this fall.
“These schools are designed to meet the diverse needs of our communities, including creating seat capacity where needed, delivering innovative and culturally responsive instruction, and preparing students with the skills and confidence to succeed in college, careers, and beyond,” said Samuels.
“This is how we build a stronger, more equitable future for New York City.”
The school will be led by principal Jason Reyes, who was born and raised in the Bronx and received Lehman College’s Aspiring Educational Leadership Award in 2016, according to his background from the Hunter School of Education.

“At the Bronx School of Hip-Hop, we’re not just preparing students for graduation—we’re developing Hip-Hop Scholar-Entrepreneurs who know who they are, own what they create, and move with purpose,” wrote Reyes in a social media post announcing the opening of the school.
The Bronx School of Hip Hop will serve grades nine through 12 in District 9 at 1600 Webster Ave.

Alongside music production classes, students will also have Regents- and AP-aligned coursework through project-based learning and will be able to take part in extracurriculars such as open mic nights, beat lab studio sessions, podcast and broadcast team, Bronx beautification mural project, digital media club, dance and movement crew, fashion and merch collective, student executive board, culture lab studios and more.
Although applications have closed for the 2026-2027 school semester, families can keep an eye out for when applications reopen next year.
