The DEC is launching a new research program to address harmful algal blooms in New York waters.
The new $2.5 million investment will support research on the subject, with the goal being to study them and find ways to cut down on how often they happen.
This comes just days after Cayuga Lake saw its first algal bloom of the season, the earliest on record.
DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton called the program “a brand new next step in order to make resources available to that we have the best understanding and the best research available, [so] New York can continue to be on the cutting edge of addressing this really important issue so that we can keep water bodies like Skaneateles [Lake] clean.”
