Arrest made in New York City stabbing death of Worcester man
Authorities in New York City have charged a teenager in the Theater District slaying of a man from Worcester, Massachusetts.
Leonides Baez was stabbed to death shortly before midnight on Monday, May 4, according to the New York Police Department. He had multiple wounds when rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
On Thursday afternoon, officers charged a 17-year-old male in the death. The teen faces charges of murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
Baez lived at 600 Main St. in Worcester, according to police. The 6Hundred apartment tower is located at the address.
Baez was sleeping on the ground on West 43rd Street before the attack, according to New York City news reports, including an account by the Gothamist. Citing court documents, the news website said the teen was one of three people who approached Baez, with the suspect chasing Baez before stabbing him.
On Wednesday, the teen was stopped after jumping a subway turnstile in Coney Island, with investigators soon tying him to the Monday night attack, the Gothamist reported. The teen initially told investigators the attack was tied to a social media trend.
