The Manhattan Public Library made history this week by debuting the first-ever lactation pod installed in a Kansas public library.
Mayor Susan Adamchak said it’s great that Manhattan offers this kind of health service.
“One of the participants in the ceremony yesterday said that she believed that this was the first to be located in a public library in Kansas,” she said. “So I think that was terrific.”
A post shared by the library’s Facebook page said a library staff member who is a new parent inspired the library to install a Mamava lactation pod.
“Sometimes the best ideas come from the heart,” the announcement said. “Inspired by one of our own staff members’ journeys into parenthood, we’ve added a little extra magic to our library.”
The pod is located on the first floor in the storytime room and is wheelchair accessible. It features light controls, shelves, outlets, fans and a mirror.
Library officials said they are excited to give Manhattan a health accommodation for young mothers and babies.
“This private, comfortable suite is a necessary upgrade to ensure every growing family feels supported and welcome.”
The Manhattan Library Foundation and the support from the Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition Inc. made the installation possible.
