VOLO, Ill. (WGN) — A famous car from a 1980s TV show that has not moved in years is at the center of a strange traffic dispute between New York City and an Illinois museum.
Volo Museum said it recently received a speeding ticket in the mail from New York City alleging KITT, the iconic car that starred alongside David Hasselhoff in Knight Rider, was clocked going 36 mph in a 25-mph school zone in Brooklyn.
The only issue is, according to the museum, the replica car has not been in New York, or on the road at all, in over a decade.
“We honestly thought it was a joke at first,” said Jim Wojdyla, marketing director for the museum. “Then we checked the violation on the official New York City website, and it’s legit.”
The ticket includes an image from a traffic camera showing what appears to be KITT’s license plate reading “KNIGHT.” Museum staff said the plate was a prop used for filming and has never been legally registered.
Museum Director Brian Grams said the museum has not paid the fine and will request a formal hearing to challenge the ticket in order to get clarification.
“The fine is only $50,” Grams said. “But we decided to request a hearing partly for clarification and partly because the entire situation is too bizarre not to pursue answers.”

After the museum posted the ticket online, the story quickly went viral on social media, and sparked questions about how the vehicle was identified in the system.
“I can’t imagine there are many KITT cars driving around the streets, so I’m very curious who that vehicle belongs to,” Wojdyla said. “I heard there may be a Knight Rider reboot coming out soon, so maybe David Hasselhoff is fighting bad guys again. If he is, he owes us 50 bucks.”
