Police had responded to the location in the area of Tyler Court, near SUNY Upstate Medical University and the I-81 viaduct, around 6 a.m. Saturday, after receiving a report that a man was menacing people with a machete.

“Then we got some calls about the same individual cutting a dog with the machete,” Syracuse Police Chief Mark Rusin said.

After investigating at the scene, officers were attempting to execute a search warrant when police say a suspect opened fire. Rusin said officers also shot back during the exchange of gunfire.

Rusin said the two officers who were shot were taken to SUNY Upstate Medical University, and the other officer, who sustained a hand injury, was seeking medical attention and was also in stable condition. 

Multiple law enforcement agencies had responded to the scene, including the sheriff’s office, New York State Police and the FBI.

At about 3:15 p.m., a suspect was taken into custody, ending a more than 8-hour standoff with authorities, police said.

“These men and women put on a badge and a gun and a bulletproof vest,” Rusin said, adding, “We know the dangers that are there, so I couldn’t be more proud.”

The Syracuse Police Department said it is working with the district attorney’s office to determine charges and that the suspect is likely to be arraigned Sunday.
