For the first time since the program was introduced in the Great Depression, SNAP and WIC are in danger of losing funding due to the federal government being shutdown. This is a very scary situation for many New York families who depend on those benefits to feed their families. One way that many in Upstate New York feed their families is by hunting deer. Now you can do that not only for your family but also a family that is in need.

Each year the New York State DEC runs their Feeding New York State program to help stock food banks with meat that is gathered by hunters across the state. They say that they get between 50 and 70,000 pounds of venison each year and this year that will help more than ever.

This is a fantastic way to get food to families that are in need. I know plenty of hunters out there who would love nothing more than to give back. If that’s you, check out this info from the NYS DEC on how you can help members of the community stay fed during this time of year. Here are the tips that they have given.

1. Drop off any legally harvested, tagged, and reported deer at one of Feeding New York State’s participating deer processors.

2. Call the processor ahead of time to ensure they can accept your deer.

3. Complete the processor’s log sheet indicating your desire to donate the deer.

You can find a full list of donation centers and deer processors by clicking here.

The DEC isn’t the only ones stepping up right now. Many businesses around the Capital Region have also highlighted programs that are here to help while the SNAP benefit situation is sorted out.

Absolutely no one should go hungry. I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of support that is being shown by the Capital Region communities to help out at this time. If you know of any places that are trying to help feed Capital Region families please feel free to send us a message on our app and we will do what we can to help spread the word.
