NEW HAVEN —  A New York-based real estate investor has purchased the Tandoor Indian restaurant diner building at Chapel and Howe streets, along with the former gas station behind it at Howe and Crown streets, for a combined $2.7 million.

Together, the two properties occupy the entire frontage along one side of Howe Street between Chapel and Crown streets, directly across from the New Haven YMCA Youth Center.

The intersection of Chapel and Howe streets sits on the seam between downtown and the Dwight and Edgewood neighborhoods.

Purchaser Konstantinos “Gus” Vorillas of Noble on Chapel St. LLC and First Elite Management Corp. in Astoria, Queens, did not immediately respond to multiple messages seeking comment about plans for the properties. 

Dave Singh, who has owned and operated Tandoor at 1226 Chapel St. for 29 years, said he has not yet spoken with the new landlord and does not know what is planned for the site. Singh said his lease runs through 2030.

“No, nothing,” Singh said when asked whether he had heard from the new owner. “I don’t know when they’re going to come down or if they’re going to send me a letter,” he said.

Whatever happens, Singh said, “Everything is OK. If they want me to go, I’m ready. If they want me to stay, I’m ready.”

He said he has spent “half of my life” running Tandoor there.

“It’s a good spot,” he said

Tandoor is known to many for its Indian lunch buffet, which currently sells for $17.95.

The stainless steel Mountain View diner building, manufactured in New Jersey in 1955, previously housed the Elm City Diner, according to Dinerville.info. It originally was the Duchess Diner.

The former Power gas station has sat vacant for years. The property previously received approval for an apartment building that was never constructed.

Both sales were recorded in city land records on April 17.

Noble on Chapel St. LLC purchased 49 Howe St. from S & S Enterprises CT Inc. for $1.6 million and the Tandoor property from Chapel 1226 LLC for $1.1 million. 

Both sale prices were significantly higher than the most recent city tax assessments, which valued 49 Howe St. at $418,300 and 1226 Chapel St. at $345,800, according to assessor’s records.
