Roughly 3 million New York residents rely on monthly funding from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, to help them pay for groceries. But for the first time in history, those funds will not be provided by the federal government on Nov. 1 due to the ongoing federal government shutdown. This week, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul authorized $65 million in emergency state funding to help food pantries throughout the state provide meals for those in need as the government shutdown continues.
