First responders are the first to show up when people need help the most, that’s why the National Association of Convenience Stores wants to make sure that those everyday heroes are recognized by the very communities they serve.

A committee of industry representatives, NACS Foundation staff and community partners will review all submissions and select the honorees
“We are open 24-seven and first responders are on 24-seven,” said O’Connell.
The NACS Foundation is inviting the public to get involved in its second annual First Responder of the Year Award. It gives the community a chance to nominate a police officer, EMT, 9-11 dispatcher, nurse, Red Cross volunteer, firefighter or K-9 unit for their dedication and service.
“My grandfather was a volunteer firefighter, and he also worked a chemical engineering job and he would be up at all hours. He would put out a fire and then pick up a cup of coffee from the convenience store and then go off to his 9-to-5. That is what we found with a lot of these people. They are volunteering and some are paid. I’m sure they’re being recognized in the rural community, but this is a national footprint and a national stage,” said O’Connell.
This award is part of the industry’s annual 24/7 Day celebration, when convenience stores nationwide come together to recognize first responders on July 24.
You can submit nominations at Convenience Cares through June 1. Three winners will be selected, and each will receive a $500 gift card. The grand prize winner will get free gas for a year and a free trip to Las Vegas for the NACS conference.
