THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) — A 5-year-old was grazed in the head during a gang shootout in the Bronx on Wednesday, according to police and sources.
The stray bullet hit the child in her right ear while she was with her mother in front of a bodega at 1007 Southern Blvd. in Longwood at around 5:25 p.m., police and sources said.
The girl was taken to the hospital in stable condition, cops said.
The suspects appeared to be involved in a gang shootout when the child was injured, sources said. It was unclear what sparked the shooting.
“It’s devastating to me. I’m a grandfather to a 5-year-old little girl,” said Javier Medina, who runs the Southern Boulevard Business Improvement District.
The NYPD released photos and videos of three suspects sought in the shootout. The footage showed the suspects running down the sidewalk while firing shots.
The suspects were last seen heading south on Southern Boulevard toward 163rd Street. There have been no arrests, and the investigation is ongoing.
The incident comes as the NYPD reports a decrease in crime across the city. In the Bronx, there have been 71 shooting incidents as of May 10, down from 85 compared to a year ago.
