NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – It’s time to upgrade your trash bin.
Starting June 1, property owners are required to use the official New York City trash bin to set out their waste. It applies only to properties with between 1 and 9 units.

If you don’t have the official New York City bin, you’ll have to pay up. Violations start at $50 for the first offense and rise to $200 by the third offense.
A 45-gallon official bin costs about $50, but the DSNY also sells 35-gallon, 25-gallon, 21-gallon and 13-gallon bins. The bins are grey with a white DSNY logo. When the new bin was created in 2024, city officials said it was “vastly more affordable” than options on the market.
The requirement for a city-branded bin is new, but New York property owners have already been required to use bins with tight-fitted lids for over a year.
It was all part of former Mayor Eric Adams’ eternal war on rats, which Mayor Zohran Mamdani has taken up as well. The city is also adding larger trash bins for high-density buildings – “Empire Bins” – which will be fully rolled out by 2031.
