1. Annual 5/14 Day of Service attracts largest volunteer turnout to date

Organizers say they had more than 600 people volunteer this year, and that it is a unique way to honor the lives lost by coming together as a community and cleaning up the place in which they live.

2. Jefferson Avenue Corridor seeing changes 4 years after Buffalo mass shooting

To those on the outside, new sidewalks, lights and trees might not seem like a big deal. But it is. Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan says it will usher in more business, wealth and opportunity for generations to come. Success has already been seen following other projects, such as on Niagara Street, where Buffalo’s rich Hispanic community is now celebrated.

3. Road reconstruction begins on LaSalle Expressway, I-190 in Niagara Falls

The project will include milling and paving 15 lane-miles of the LaSalle Expressway and 7 lane-miles of I-190 between Witmer Road (State Route 31) and Upper Mountain Road, and the replacement of bridge decks along the expressway.

4. New York lawmakers pass 12th state budget extender that runs though May 18

The New York state Legislature on Thursday passed a 12th state budget extender — now more than six weeks past the budget’s deadline — which was promptly signed into law by Gov. Kathy Hochul. The extender runs through Monday, May 18, and funds state operations.

5. Inflation numbers reach highest point since 2022

Prices have seen the largest annual increase in more than three years. That is according to the latest producer price index released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. According to data, the index rose 1.4% for the month. That’s higher than the 0.5% increase experts expected. If you look at the overall picture, the index is up 6% from this time last year. It’s important to note that this is not the highest we have seen in recent years.

6. Preventing the spread of hantavirus: Inside the U.S. pathogen containment systems

Infectious disease experts around the world have been studying hantavirus closely since the Korean War, when 3,000 soldiers fell ill with a mysterious disease near the Hantan River.
