1. New second home tax also opens door to future city property tax structure overhaul
After promising to deliver millions of dollars to help balance Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s city budget, Gov. Kathy Hochul yesterday released details of her new second-home tax that could apply to 10,000 properties in New York City, quickly drawing the ire of the real estate industry.
The plan also assumes that the city and state governments will amend the city’s property tax system.
2. City Council progressives again push once-vetoed housing bill
A City Council bill that would give nonprofit groups a head start in buying distressed apartment buildings is getting a new push from progressive lawmakers.
Council member Sandy Nurse reintroduced the Community Opportunity to Purchase Act after it was vetoed in the last council session. The bill, known as COPA, would force owners of apartment buildings with violations to give nonprofits a first crack at purchasing them when they’re up for sale.
3. MTA: Fire sparks delays, cancellations at Penn Station
Transit officials are warning commuters to expect delays and cancellations at Penn Station through this morning, after a track fire yesterday.
The fire broke out at around 11 a.m. Service on the Long Island Rail Road, NJ Transit and Amtrak were all been impacted by the fire.
