Manhattan High girls’ swimming captured its second consecutive Centennial League championship Thursday, finishing with 472 points behind six event wins.

The Indians finished ahead of Washburn Rural (409) and Junction City (294), successfully defending last season’s league crown.

Manhattan opened the meet with one of its top performances of the season in the 200-yard medley relay. The quartet of Delaney Saucier, Caris Goering, Ava McKee and Ashtan Hansen placed first in 2:05.43, earning an automatic state qualifying time. A second Manhattan relay team added a third-place finish.

The Indians continued to pile up points in the 200 freestyle, where Goering placed third with a state consideration time of 2:15.61. Goering added another consideration time in the breaststroke with a runner-up finish.

McKee highlighted Manhattan’s effort in the 200 individual medley, placing second with a consideration time of 2:30.80. McKee added another individual victory in the 500 freestyle, placing first at 6:03.41 with a state consideration mark.

Hansen paced Manhattan’s sprint group with a league title and state consideration time in the 50 freestyle at 27.48, while Aubrey Niedermayer and Mary Brighton also added scoring swims.

Saucier followed with another league title in the 100 butterfly, touching first in 1:12.52, while Copp added a third-place finish.

In the 100 freestyle, Hansen captured another individual title with a state consideration time of 1:00.56. Brighton and Madilyn Powell added third- and fourth-place finishes.

The Indians earned another win in the 200 freestyle relay, as the team of Niedermayer, Hansen, McKee and Goering placed first in 1:53.29. Manhattan’s B relay added a third-place finish.

In the backstroke, Saucier placed third with a time of 1:09.75, while Lyla Buser and Niedermayer added fourth- and sixth-place finishes.

Manhattan closed the meet with a runner-up finish in the 400 freestyle relay behind the team of Niedermayer, Brighton, Buser and Saucier.

Manhattan placed 10 swimmers on the All-Centennial League teams. Hansen, McKee, Saucier and Goering earned first-team honors, while Spencer, Copp, Powell, Inman, Brighton and Niedermayer were named second team.

Up next for the Indians is the 6A state swim meet, scheduled for Thursday through Saturday at the Shawnee Mission Aquatic Center in Lenexa.
