The crash happened around 6 p.m. near West 109th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.
Police said a 61-year-old man driving a Mercedes-Benz SUV north on Amsterdam Avenue lost control of the vehicle, slammed into two parked cars, and struck five men ages 35, 36, 44, 46, and 51. All five victims were rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, authorities said.
The 35-year-old and 46-year-old victims later died from their injuries, police said.
The driver stayed at the scene and was taken into custody.
“It appears the operator of the motor vehicle was intoxicated,” DCPI said in a background statement.
The investigation remains ongoing.
