1. LIRR strike drags into Monday after marathon talks fail to reach deal
A marathon day of negotiations that finished early Monday failed to end a strike that shut down the Long Island Rail Road, North America’s largest commuter rail system, setting the stage for a rough start to the work week for about 250,000 commuters.
The unions and the MTA have been negotiating a new contract since 2023, with talks stalled over workers’ salaries and healthcare premiums.
2. City to open empty Brooklyn preschool after years of delays
The city will finally open a vacant preschool — on which it has spent millions in renovations and rent — to students this fall, officials said Monday morning.
There are 63 seats at the Van Brunt Street school, and the city says those are among about 700 seats being added to the preschool system this week.
3. Driver charged in crash that killed two on the Upper West Side
A man was arrested and charged after he allegedly drove drunk into a group of pedestrians on the Upper West Side, killing two of them, authorities said Saturday.
Two of the four pedestrians, 46-year-old Jason Negron and 35-year-old Michael Saint-Hilaire, were pronounced dead at the hospital, authorities said.
