Brooklyn resident Hon Cuong Quach was struck and killed by a driver having a medical emergency in Astoria.

A Brooklyn man was struck and killed by an elderly driver experiencing a medical episode in Astoria during the afternoon of Wednesday, May 13.
Police from the 114th Precinct responded to a 911 call of a pedestrian struck at the intersection of 47th Street and 25th Avenue a few blocks west of the Brooklyn Queens Expressway where they found a 59-year-old Hon Cuong Quach of Borough Park lying on the roadway. EMS rushed him to Elmhurst Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Upon investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad, a 73-year-old man was behind the wheel of a gray 2003 Honda Civic traveling westbound on 25th Avenue when he suffered a medical emergency and failed to navigate the road and struck the victim and subsequently struck a 2024 BMW X5 and a 2022 BMW X5, which were parked and unoccupied near the intersection. The driver of the Honda Civic remained on scene. There are no arrests and the investigation remains ongoing by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad.
Eric Quach launched a GoFundMe account to help with the cost of giving his father a funeral and burial. He wrote that his father was the family’s sole provider and that he had a cardiac arrest as doctors tried to resuscitate him at Elmhurst Hospital. Investigators told the Quach family that the driver of the Honda Civic had experienced a diabetic attack prior to the fatal collision.

“One of my fondest memories of him was also one of my earliest. I remember I saw my dad reading his newspaper, and as a wee lad I decided to imitate him. I don’t know why, but it’s always a memory that has stuck with me,” his son wrote. “He meant so much to us and his memory will forever be with us, and now it feels like a big piece of our hearts are missing.”
