Of those New Yorkers, millions are sports fans, people who are unafraid to throw on a Jets jersey or a Mets cap with pride, regardless of record. But only a miniscule amount of those fans have possessed the drive to go the extra mile.
There are 23,507 sports license plates registered in New York as of March 2026, according to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. If you’re one of those with a custom sports license plate, congratulations, you’re part of the 1%. Or, more accurately, the 0.16%.

How to get one
If flexing your fandom through your license plate sounds interesting, you can begin the process at dmv.ny.gov/plates/picture-plates. There are 31 sports-themed plates to choose from, and more than 200 picture plates overall. The initial cost is $60, with a $31.25 annual renewal rate. Personalized plate numbers cost $91.25 initially with a $62.50 annual renewal.
