CITYWIDE — THE DEPARTMENT OF SANITATION and the Sanitation Foundation announced the winners of this year’s Trucks of Art competition in Union Square Tuesday morning. Trucks of Art offers a paid opportunity for five local artists, selected from 400 applicants this year, to paint an entire DSNY truck. On Tuesday, DSNY unveiled the newly painted trucks, which showcase themes of sustainability and cleanliness and honor the city’s 7,500 sanitation workers.
The five winners include two Brooklyn natives, artists Marieke Perchik Bender and Catherine Witherwax. Witherwax’s truck incorporates visuals from Pac Man to highlight the importance of sanitation. The truck painted by winner Allison Bouganim will circulate throughout Brooklyn Community District 10. Bender’s truck will circulate in Queens Community District 1, in the borough where she now lives.
The artists, who each received a stipend for their work, had seven days to paint the trucks using only donated household paints, making Trucks of Art a zero-waste event in conjunction with its artistic focus on sustainability.
After the unveiling, the newly painted trucks will immediately begin their collection routes throughout the city. This is the third Trucks of Art event, the latest competition since two in 2019 and 2022.
