Friends of Whitey Ford Field thank everyone who participated in their cleanup last week. Fifteen volunteers from Astoria Sports, NYC Rising Stars, Queens Lighted Softball Association, Eleanor Roosevelt High School, Frank Sinatra High School for the Arts, and the FDNY (NYC Bravest) with their youth explorers unit ventured down to Whitey Ford Field to clean out the dugout, remove divots from the ballfield, and rake the infield.

In particular, we would like to thank Mike Gutierrez and Michael Brown, who had battled a huge blaze at one of Astoria’s oldest churches, First Reformed Church, a few days before. This five-alarm fire, which started in an abandoned rectory, eventually spread to most of the church, resulting in its complete demolition a week or so later.
