THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) — A 14-year-old Bronx boy who was fatally stabbed in the chest while waiting for a school bus used his last breaths to call his dad for help, authorities said.

Waldo Mejia, 29, was indicted for murder Thursday for allegedly attacking the teen while he was on his way to school on Jan. 10, 2025, prosecutors said.

Mejia is accused of stabbing Caleb Rios in the heart and lungs several times near Lincoln Avenue and 138th Street at around 10 a.m.

The teen called his father before collapsing on the street, authorities said. Rios was rushed to the hospital after a good Samaritan flagged an ambulance, but the boy could not be saved.

“His last conversation was in my house, talking about the future,” the boy’s grandmother, Carmon Aponte, previously told PIX11 News.

Aponte said Caleb dreamed of playing professional football so he could take care of his family.

“Caleb’s death shocked and saddened the city,” Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark said.

Mejia is also accused of stabbing a 38-year-old man in the stairwell of a Bronx subway station five days before allegedly killing the teen, authorities said.

The victim needed multiple surgeries after the knife pierced his arm and severed an artery, according to court documents.

Mejia allegedly struggled with mental health issues before he was deemed unfit to stand trial in March 2025, but he was cleared seven months later, prosecutors said.

The defendant was also indicted for attempted murder, manslaughter, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon charges.

Mejia pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail at his arraignment on Thursday, according to court records. His attorney could not be reached.
