NEW YORK (TNND) — One individual died after a blast on Friday at a New York City shipyard, officials said.

A total of 36 individuals were injured in the blast, most were firefighters and first responders and one civilian died.

The FDNY received a report of two workers trapped and a fire in the basement of a metal structure in the back of the shipping docks, said Joanne Mariano with the fire department’s press office.

“This was a complex, fast-developing emergency situation,” New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said during a press conference Friday evening.

More than 200 firefighters and emergency medical personnel from 68 units responded to the explosion on Friday evening.

Crews were fighting the fire when an explosion happened 50 minutes later. The fire is still burning and the cause of the explosion is under investigation.

One bystander, Richard Oviogor, who was in the area, told WABC-TV he heard two explosions that seemed like a “big shock wave.”

Several businesses, including a coffee roasting company and a self-storage facility, are located in the area around the shipyard.
