NYC to add 5,000 new police officers

CITYWIDE — MAYOR ERIC ADAMS on Friday announced new funding in the upcoming November 2025 Financial Plan Update that will increase the uniformed headcount of the New York City Police Department by 5,000 officers, bringing the total number of officers to 40,000 by Fiscal Year 2029 (July 2028), the highest level in 20 years.

Funding of $17.8 million in the upcoming fiscal year will increase to $315.8 million by FY 2029, Adams said. The new phase-in will begin in July 2026 with 300 officers, with the goal of 35,000 officers by fall 2026 and increasing annually thereafter.

“This investment will put an additional 5,000 police officers on the streets as the NYPD continues to deliver record-low shooting incidents and victims and the safest third quarter ever on our subways,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said in a statement. “Every new officer means safer streets, stronger communities, and a thriving city. This commitment allows us to keep recruiting, training and deploying the next generation of women and men to build on our success.”

In his release, Adams also celebrated an increase in afterschool programs, baseline funding for 3K programs and cuts in the city’s income tax for low-income filers. The mayor and commissioner also highlighted the NYPD’s new Domestic Violence Unit.
