The New York Yankees finally had something go their way in the later innings for a change on Sunday, as Aaron Judge hit a two-run walk-off home run against the Tampa Bay Rays.
However, there are still clearly numerous flaws on this ballclub, and the Yankees are expected to attempt to address them before the MLB trade deadline.

New York’s lineup depth has been a major source of contention, and its bullpen has been a roller coaster throughout the entire campaign.
But you know one area in which the Yankees are completely fine? Their starting rotation, as Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon are both back in the fold, and Max Fried is expected to return in the relatively near future.
Cam Schlittler has evolved into an ace, Will Warren has been very good all season long and Ryan Weathers is looking like a revelation of an acqusition.
So why, then, is New York being named as a potential destination for Detroit Tigers star Tarik Skubal?

Bob Nightengale of USA Today has reported that the Yanks are among four teams rival executives believe will be competing for Skubal between now and Aug. 3, and while the idea of Skubal sounds tantalizing, the Yankees don’t need him.

Not only that, but Skubal just had elbow surgery (the third one of his career), and while he is making tremendous progress in his recovery, there is definitely reason for pause.
The 29-year-old is hitting free agency next winter and is a Scott Boras client, o prepare for an absolute nightmare when it comes to negotiations.
What if the Yankees trade a host of prospects for Skubal and he ends up getting re-injured? And then what if New York loses him for nothing during the offseason?

I’ve been a big proponent of the Yanks going all in this year considering the team’s window is closing with Judge having turned 34 last month, but this isn’t the way to do it.
Again, the Yankees’ starting rotation is already stacked as is, so much so that Weathers will need to go to the bullpen once Fried returns.
Acquiring another starting pitcher — especially one who could be a two-month rental — would be a waste of resources. Instead, New York should focus on finding another bat while also adding some relief help.
We know how good Skubal is when he’s healthy, but his medical history is concerning, and he’s going to command a massive contract in free agency, one that the Yankees probably won’t be willing to pay.

New York should stay away and pursue other more appropriate pieces.
