In the city, the toll of balancing work, relationships, commutes, and a full calendar can feel heavy over time. There are plenty of ways to beat the blues in New Jersey, and HG always recommends taking a moment to partake in self-care, but there are services to support one’s health + wellness journey, too. Liberty Psychological Services, LLC, located at 51 Newark Street, Suite #310 in Hoboken, is a psychotherapy practice run by psychologist Joe Coleman, PhD. Joe takes a different approach, with a belief that anxiety is not always the problem; rather, the ways people avoid it are what can cause that feeling of being stuck. Read on to learn about Liberty Psychological Services, Dr. Coleman, and what the HG team learned.

A Smaller Therapy Practice in the Mile Square

Liberty Psychological Services, located at 51 Newark Street, Suite #310, is a Hoboken-based practice run by Dr. Joe Coleman, PhD. Dr. Coleman is a doctoral-level psychologist who sees patients both in-person in Hoboken and virtually across New Jersey and New York. Dr. Coleman’s approach to wellness is small and personalized by design, aiming to understand each client’s history, relationships, and current needs.

Dr. Coleman works with those who may seem composed and in control of things on the outside, but are internally caught in patterns that are hard to address. Some examples include overthinking, avoiding difficult conversations, lacking self-care, or feeling judged by what others think. “I help you understand what anxiety is and why and how you avoid it,” Dr. Coleman shared with HG. “Through this, we glean how you can ‘Go Toward Anxiety’ and feel capable and confident as a result.”

One of Dr. Coleman’s most unique traits with Liberty Psychological Services is his practice of encouraging clients to “Go Toward Anxiety”. This phrase intends to teach the idea that instead of treating anxiety as something to dodge, numb, or outsmart, it must be confronted, as it may be protecting someone from feeling, saying, or doing.

Dr. Coleman aims to help patients see how the avoidance of anxiety can fuel bad cycles in their interpersonal and professional lives. Sessions are a long-term commitment to understand what is happening internally and how certain anxiety-related patterns show up.

HG also learned that Dr. Coleman’s perspective is that many people are not struggling because of anxiety, but rather because they have learned to move away from pain, judgment, or conflict in ways that limit them. His services help patients notice where in life they are living by others’ wants and needs, versus pursuing self-care and goals that promote a happier lifestyle
