Mayor Zohran Mamdani unveiled his $124 billion executive budget proposal earlier this month, but now it’s the City Council’s turn to take a closer look.

The Council began a series of executive budget hearings on Tuesday, and the deadline for Mamdani and the Council to pass a new budget is June 30.

Andrew Rein, president of the Citizens Budget Commission, joined NY1 anchor Shannan Ferry on “News All Day” to discuss the mayor’s budget proposal and what to expect from the council’s hearings.

“By baselining funding for libraries and cultural institutes, he has taken off the table part of the budget dance that mayors and councils have always negotiated before,” Rein said. “But still, the council speaker has been a leader in saying that we need to reduce spending.”
