Students in Anne Arundel County rallied around their teacher after learning she was in contention for an award — and free breakfast for a year.Many people remember the qualities of their favorite teacher, and Emily Davis’ students made it clear she is the teacher of the year.When students at Brooklyn Park Middle School learned of the Iron Rooster and SECU Teacher of the Year Award, they made it their mission to ensure Davis took home the prize.For 13 years, Davis has stepped into her seventh grade English and language arts classroom with a passion for her students — which is evident when she describes her job.”It’s all about making that impact, helping the kids (who) need help the most, coming in every day and showing up for the kids, no matter what else is going on,” Davis told WBAL-TV 11 News. “It’s always all about the kids, and when you really kind of approach your day like that, I mean, it’s the best job in the world. I never dread coming to work.”During Teacher Appreciation Week about a month ago, Iron Rooster and SECU announced their search for the Teacher of the Year Award, and they received responses from across Maryland, but one teacher stood out.”We awarded Mrs. Emily Davis with breakfast for an entire year on behalf of us and SECU, with the help of Ryan Ripken. It was just a great community service experience. We love being out in the community; that’s one of our goals and one of our pillars,” said Kyle Algaze, owner of Iron Rooster.There are many qualities that embody a great teacher. Ripken remembers teachers who gave him guidance and allowed him to grow and learn his way.”What the people around you think of you is the most important, and hearing the teacher, or hearing students talk about their teacher, that they gave me goosebumps,” said Ryan Ripken, with Ripken Media.Algaze said he comes from a family of educators and wants teachers to feel seen.”It was the passion, not only in herself — you could tell — but also in the people that nominated her. There was just this feeling that she was one of those things that you can look back on many years from now, if you were one of her students, and say, ‘She really made a difference in my life,'” Algaze told WBAL-TV 11 News. Algaze even provided lunch for all the teachers on Monday. Fortunately, Davis’ favorite restaurant is Iron Rooster, and she was ready with her usual order: “Rancher’s Benny eggs poached hard is always my go-to. Avocado toast, and then they have an amazing breakfast burrito that I just get without sausage, that is awesome. And then, obviously, Roostarts.”
