Less than two weeks after being released from the hospital for heart treatment, Queen Margrethe of Denmark has been admitted once again.
The Royal House announced on Monday that “Her Majesty Queen Margrethe has been admitted to Rigshospitalet and has been treated, after a CT scan showed a large blood clot in the hip region as a result of a previous fall.” The royals added, “It is expected that Queen Margrethe will now be hospitalized for a number of days,” and that, “Her Majesty is doing well under the circumstances.”
Beyond the mention of a previous fall, it’s unclear whether her current hospitalization bears any relation to her previous admission on May 14. At that time, a spokesperson for the royal family confirmed that the former monarch was in hospital “for observation and further examinations,” following a heart health concern which has subsequently been reported by many outlets as a heart attack. She reportedly underwent angioplasty, a procedure to help widen the coronary artery to improve blood flow, and was released early last week.
At the time, her daughter-in-law, Queen Mary, told reporters that the queen was, “doing much better.”
Both Mary and Margrethe use the title queen, despite the fact that Margrethe abdicated the throne two years ago after serving as monarch for more than 50 years. The announcement, which the queen made in her New Years Eve speech in 2023, came as a surprise to many, making her the first Danish monarch in nearly 900 years to voluntarily surrender the throne. Her son, King Frederik, took up the mantle in January 2024.
At the time, health concerns were seemingly on the queen’s mind, and she cited a back surgery in her abdication announcement, saying, “Inevitably, the operation gave cause to thoughts about the future–whether now would be an appropriate time to pass on the responsibility to the next generation. I have decided that now is the right time.”
