On April 23, Harlem World Magazine (HWM) hosted an anniversary party in honor of its 23 years. Twenty three years on the 23rd was the theme for the event.
The chic, casual-attired celebration welcomed guests for an evening of cocktails, conversation, and dancing. Overlooking the main space, attendees spent time in the lounge area selecting their choice of libations. The culinary menu, sponsored by HWM President CC Minton, who is the Founder of the House of Minton, consisted of vegan and seafood bite-sized tea sandwiches, veggie platters, chips, and a variety of savory dips, along with red and white sweets honoring the magazine’s colors.
Never miss new stories in Harlem

Shortly after the party began, President Minton welcomed guests, asked them to personally introduce themselves as a group, and promised that the evening would be unique. HWM Executive Editor, Eartha Watts Hicks, shared a bit of her story about how she met HWM Founder/CEO Danny Tisdale and how she has contributed to the magazine and community in so many ways.

“In 2010, I was attending a Project Enterprise Gala, where Daniel Tisdale and HWM were being honored for outstanding service to Harlem’s community. Harlem World Magazine is the voice of the community, told from the perspective of those who love Harlem and are familiar with Harlem’s nuanced culture,” she said.

She added, “We record the narrative, preserve our perspective, and reflect the style, the heart, and the edge that make Harlem and the Harlem Renaissance fascinating to the world at large. As part of the Harlem World team, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our readers and supporters for helping us sustain this journey for 23 years. May we all continue to grow and thrive.”

Harlem World Magazine advisory board member Jinni Rock-Bailey, longtime contributor Lil Nickelson, and photographer Rudy Collins were in attendance.
The evening then took a spin towards more movement. A popular style of dancing with the Harlem crowd, Chicago Steppin’ was started by some of the guests. The history of the dance is that it started during the big band era and evolved into a partner dance during the 1950s and 1960s. Today, the dance is popular in urban communities and has evolved using the genres of soul and R&B.
