ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Did you see the videos on social media of what appears to be a meteor falling from the sky in Buffalo?

A meteor is a space rock that enters Earth’s atmosphere at high speeds and burns up. Meteors aren’t exceptionally rare. However, it is rare for a meteor to be large enough and penetrate deep enough into the Earth’s atmosphere to create a sonic boom. That’s what people reported hearing in Buffalo, which some misook for an explosion.

First Alert Meteorologist Nate Morris explains what a meteor is and what people saw in Buffalo on Wednesday morning. See his report in the video in this story.
