Safety and park advocates are renewing the call to make city parks more accessible and pedestrian-friendly with a proposal to ban all cars.
Advocates and elected officials on Saturday are launching a new car-free parks campaign with a block party and rally at McCarren Park in Greenpoint. Organizers will close down a section of Driggs Avenue, which cuts through McCarren Park, for the block party, which will feature children’s art activities, ping-pong and a bike wash.

The coalition told NY1 that it wants the city to create a comprehensive plan to reduce and eliminate private vehicle traffic from parks, which it says builds on Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s recent plan to re-envision Grand Army Plaza
NY1 reached out to the mayor’s office, which said in a statement, “Our parks are our backyard, and we’re always working with NYC Parks to explore additional opportunities for New Yorkers to enjoy the outdoors”

Organizers added that they believe eliminating cars from city parks will help improve safety, re-connect neighborhoods and improve accessibility to open spaces.

Mamdani has been pushing for more people-focused public spaces across the city, and advocates say car-free parks is an expansion of that.
Private vehicles are already banned in Central and Prospect parks.
