WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – Zoo New York is welcoming a new family member to the zoo.
Meet Nash, a 7 year old North American River Otter. He recently joined the zoo, coming from the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo south of Albany.
Nash is very fashion forward, he likes to wear his toy rings as necklaces. He comes in after the zoo’s previous otter Otis died at the exceptional age of almost 21 years old this winter.
Otis’s son, Ricky, never lived alone at the zoo, and seeing as otter’s are social creatures, they decided to bring in Nash. Zookeepers say he’s doing well in his new habitat.
“Nash is amazing,” said zookeeper Steve Chorma. “So, he’s a little bit of a counter balance to Ricky a little bit. Everybody know that Ricky is over filled with energy ad Nash likes to take the path most traveled sometimes. He’s a lot more laid back, but as you can see to my right right now he is swimming, he is having a good time, and he’s got a ton of personality.”
As of now, the zoo is being careful with the two otters, letting them feed and use the pen at different times, but they hope they’ll soon be getting along for years to come.
