A Bronx man on probation out of New York was ordered held Friday, after he allegedly sliced a man’s cheek during a fight at the Wawa in Margate.
Disney Abreu, 33, was charged with second-degree aggravated assault after the victim suffered a six-inch laceration from his left cheek to behind his left ear, according to the allegations.
Police were called to the 9300 Ventnor Ave. on May 24, after a fight between the two men led to the alleged knife attack.
The victim the man attacked him and fled the area in a vehicle that police stopped a short time later.
Abreu admitted to being involved in the fight and consented to a search of his vehicle, according to the charges and information released during his detention hearing Friday.
No blade was recovered.
The victim, whose name was not released, was taken to the hospital due to the depth and severity of the laceration, according to the affidavit of probable cause obtained by BreakingAC.
Abreu appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the offense, the officer wrote in the report.
Abreu was on vacation with his wife and children for the Memorial Day weekend, and had run into the store when the victim allegedly made inappropriate comments to Abreu’s wife, defense attorney Holly Bitters told the judge.
She said Abreu was trying to de-escalate the situation when the unnamed man punched him, and a fight followed.
Both Abreu and the victim had injuries consistent with a physical fight, the affidavit states.
Judge Jorge Combs however said that he was concerned about the violence during a busy holiday weekend in a holiday town. He also noted Abreu’s criminal history, including his probation status.
He now remains in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
