Ritz-Carlton Central Park on Central Park South

Ritz-Carlton

An impressive number of five-star hotels in New York City are located at the southern end of Central Park, between Columbus Circle and Fifth Avenue. Considered among the most desirable locations in the city, these properties are blessed with expansive views and sprawling green space right outside their doors. They share the same street with ultra-expensive residential skyscrapers that realtors have dubbed “Billionaires’ Row.”

This list of luxury hotels includes The Plaza, JW Marriott Essex House New York and The Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park, all of which sit directly on Central Park South. Others, such as The Pierre, The Trump International Hotel & Tower, Park Hyatt New York, and 1 Hotel Central Park, are just steps away.

New York City’s luxury hotel market is remarkably resilient even during economic downturns, but even upscale hotels must compete and differentiate themselves. One way to achieve this is to build on their unique locations and extend the guest experience beyond the hotel itself.

The Launch of Ritz-Carlton Signature Experiences

The Ritz-Carlton brand is probably best known for its legendary customer service, which is spelled out in the company’s Gold Standards.

But earlier this year, the company raised the bar for luxury. The Ritz-Carlton began rolling out a menu of “Signature Experiences” that go beyond the traditional amenities travelers expect at upscale hotels, such as plush towels and bathrobes, beautiful furnishings, high-end toiletries, fine dining, and a club floor.

Each of these carefully curated experiences is hyper-local and immersive, created to capture the essence of what makes each location unique and memorable. They are also personalized and available only to a handful of guests at a time.

For example, last January, The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, located on a barrier island with sand dunes, was one of the brand’s first to launch signature experiences, including a guided trek through a nature preserve with a marine biologist to learn about the area’s rich ecosystems.

The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lake offered guests the opportunity to drive a luxury supercar to the Daytona International Speedway for a VIP tour.

At The Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park, guests can choose from one-of-a-kind on-site or nearby experiences, perfect for celebrating a milestone birthday or anniversary. Like other Ritz-Carlton Signature Experiences, each one is exclusive to its respective location.

“Our goal was to develop bespoke offerings that feel authentic to The Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park, and provide guests with experiences they could only access through a stay at our property,” General Manager Borja Garcia told me in an e-mail.

Garcia explained that while most are evergreen, some change with the seasons or as new opportunities emerge in the ever-evolving city. For example, the Rockefeller Holiday Package is only available during the holiday season. “The holidays are so deeply tied to the emotional magic and nostalgia of New York City, and many of our guests feel a very personal connection to those moments and tradition,” he added.

This is a sampling of the Ritz-Carlton New York Central Park Signature Experiences currently available:

Sotheby’s Private Shopping Experience

Guests can arrange a private Sotheby’s en-suite shopping experience featuring handbags, jewelry, or other collections. Located on Madison Avenue on Manhattan’s Upper East Side (about 1.5 miles from the hotel), Sotheby’s is one of the world’s largest and most famous marketplaces for luxury items.

Curtain Call: A Private Broadway Experience

Music and theater buffs appreciate the hotel’s proximity to the heart of the Broadway theater district. From a selection of productions, guests can arrange an intimate, private concert (with at least six songs) in their guest rooms. The musical event is followed by a meet-and-greet with the Broadway performers and light refreshments.

Picnic in the Park

In every season, Central Park is an urban oasis enjoyed by native New Yorkers and tourists. In spring, summer and fall, guests can find a place to spread a blanket on the Sheep Meadow or the Great Lawn, or sit on picnic tables near the pickleball courts and enjoy a gourmet lunch packed in a picnic basket prepared by the hotel’s culinary team.

Paint The Park

Founded in 1875, the Art Students League of New York (located nearby on West 57th Street) has provided arts education for aspiring artists of all skill levels, but is best known for launching the careers of Georgia O’Keeffe and Norman Rockwell. Hotel guests can discover their inner artist by learning or practicing techniques in their suite with views of the park.

“The traditional markers of luxury hotel status, the spa menu, the pillow selection, the marble bathroom, stopped being differentiators,” says Sid Williams-Heath, a public relations professional with the Claire Bahn Group, who writes about identity and place. “Physical amenities are easily copied by competitors. The room gets the booking started. The uncopyable experience is what drives loyalty.”

Note:

Pricing of Signature Experiences at The Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park varies by experience, with offerings ranging from approximately $800 to $7,500, exclusive of the room rate and taxes.
